Spray tan care

Preparing for your spray tan, what to expect on the day, and how to look after your skin afterwards.

Clare Marie Beauty spray tanning
  • Ensure all shaving is carried out at least 24 hours and all waxing at least 48 hours prior to your spray tan
  • Exfoliate your skin, for 2-3 days if possible, prior to your spray tan using an exfoliating body scrub and loofah/exfoliating gloves
  • Keep your skin well moisturised for 2-3 days prior to your spray tan
  • Avoid skin care products which contain excessive amounts of oil and/or are oil based. Oil will sit on the surface of your skin and the tanning solutions be unable to develop to its full potential
  • It is advised to wear a clear nail polish on their finger and toe nails as this will prevent any unlikely discolouration
  • Please avoid using any deodorant, perfumes, makeup, or moisturisers 6 hours prior to your treatment, or ensure all of these products are rinsed off with clean water before your spray tan
  • Arrive with dry hair as wet hair may drip onto your skin and cause an uneven result
  • Avoid wearing white (or your best!) underwear as although the tanning solution does wash out of clothing, this cannot be guaranteed
  • Disposable underwear, hair net, and sticky feet are provided. However, if you feel more comfortable you can wear your own underwear/shorts/vest/t-shirt, bearing in mind that any areas covered will not be tanned. If you prefer to have no tan lines, you can opt for no clothing at all. I never judge and have seen all shapes and sizes.
  • Bring loose clothing and flip flops with you to wear after your spray tan. The first few hours after application are the most crucial and any tight fitting clothing may affect the results
  • Avoid wearing bra straps after your treatment as this may affect the results
  • Tan is required to be left on for a minimum of 8 hours (or 4 hours for an express tan) then washed off to reveal glowing results. Pat yourself dry with a towel afterwards.
  • Avoid excessive scratching/rubbing
  • Avoid exercise straight after as this could sweat the developing tan away. After you have rinsed your guide colour off, exercising as normal is fine
  • After your first shower, keep your skin well moisturised with an oil-free product. This will keep your tan looking even and natural
  • If you need to shave after your first shower, please do so lightly as shaving promotes skin exfoliation
  • Avoid long baths or showers as this may shorten the life of your spray tan
  • Avoid saunas, steam rooms, and chlorinated swimming pools as these luxuries promote skin exfoliation
  • Towards the end of the 7 days, you will see your spray tan start to fade in places, usually around the bra line. This is when you can now start to lightly exfoliate using a gentle body scrub to keep an even colour
  • Your spray tan does not contain an SPF, please wear an oil-free protection
